I just wanted to throw out a quick plug for my friend Ken's Daily Top Ten List. The topics and entries are visitor-submitted and voted on by the visitors too. There's a new topic every day. The more people that participate, the better and funnier the lists. Check it out!.

A Sucker Bet?

At the company I work for we have a thing called Kitchen Duty. Everyone gets assigned 1 to 2 days a month that they are responsible for making sure the kitchen gets cleaned up and the dishes get washed and put away.

I have a bet with one of my co-workers over which of us can have a beer at the most bars in 2007 that we've never been to before. The loser has to do the winner's kitchen duty for all of 2008.

Now, in 2006 I had a beer at 180 new bars, so common sense says I'm going to be tough to beat. But his rationale is that because I have been to so many, it's harder for me to find new ones I haven't been to before. In fact as of last week he was up on me 6 to 1 -- with two of his new bars being ones I had taken him to.

However since last Friday I have been to 12 more new places for me, putting the score at 13 to 6 in my favor:

  1. Pizzeria Uno (Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, MO)
  2. The Chip Shot (North Kansas City, MO)
  3. Denim and Diamonds (North Kansas City, MO)
  4. The Other Place (Downtown, Overland Park, KS)
  5. Maloney's (Downtown, Overland Park, KS)
  6. The Peanut (Downtown, Overland Park, KS)
  7. J. Barleycorn's (Overland Park, KS)
  8. Arizona's Sports Bar (Overland Park, KS)
  9. Jake's Place (Shawnee, KS)
  10. Danally's (Shawnee, KS)
  11. Court Of aPpealS (Downtown, Shawnee, KS)
  12. McCoy's Public House (Westport, Kansas City, MO)
  13. O'Malley And Sons (Weston, MO)

So it's on now!

If he agrees to go to karaoke this Thursday, then beforehand I'll treat him to #7 for his list. I'm a good sport.

Still...

VICTORY WILL BE MINE!

Terrorists Now Bombing People's Back Yards!

boxfear.jpgIn case you missed it...

Yesterday in Kansas City some Fox News fanatic flipped out because the wind blew a carboard box into their back yard and they thought it was a bomb.

After police, fire, bomb squad, and news cameras arrived on the scene, the wind tumbled the box again to reveal its emptiness.

Do you think the panic-stricken resident might be a transplant from Boston?

Are KC's Leaders Manic-Depresssive?

Tower Properties is currently demolishing a dilapidated motel and a structurally unsafe parking garage in downtown Kansas City's North Loop. That's all fine and dandy.

They are also demolishing the 116-year-old Grand Opera House. This is not cool. They are getting away with this while at the same time the younger Empire Theater on the opposite side of downtown is being saved and restored.

What will replace these three buildings?

Surface parking lots.

That's right, Tower Properties has been given TIF money to demolish these buildings and create three new surface lots in the North Loop.

The end result will be a massive scar of 8 contiguous city blocks of surface parking clustered in the North Loop.

This scar is being created with public money at the very same time that public money is being used to repair just such a scar on the opposite side of downtown.

The Power and Light District, which is costing over $800,000,000 to develop, is replacing what was once 7 blocks of surface parking and blight. So why is the city now allowing an even larger area of blight to be created at the same time?

As if this were not insult enough, Tower is demolishing all three of these structures simultaneously. They have closed all the sidewalks around these sites, including both sides of Main Street.

So now not only has the ability to walk between the River Market and the Loop been greatly hampered, Commerce Bank employees who park in the surface lots north of 7th Street are now cut off from their jobs.

There's going to be a lot of frustrated bank workers this morning when they return from thee President's Day holiday!

Update on my Goals for 2007

Earlier this year I set myself a few goals for 2007. Today I received official notification that the first one of those goals has been met.

  • To break the elusive 30-mile barrier with a long walk somewhere in the metro area.
  • To weigh 20 pounds less on December 31 than I do on January 1.
  • To have an HbA1c blood test result of 5.9, which would essentially be diabetes-free.
  • To visit 50 new bars while still achieving the above two goals. ;)
  • To throughly clean my place sometime this spring, and clean out my damn closet.

HbA1c is a blood test that measures the amount of glucose bound to the hemoglobin in your red blood cells. Since red blood cells live about 90 days, it gives an accurate overall picture of how well your body processes sugar.

A normal HbA1c reading, meaning non-diabetic, is 3.0 to 6.0. Mine have always been in the 6.1 to 6.4 range for the last two years. But today I received my lab results from my checkup this past Monday and my latest read is 5.8! This means that for the past 3 months my body has been processing sugar as well as a non-diabetic person.

It's taken a lot of work, resisting carb-rich foods and burning an average of 450 caolories a day on the treadmill, but I believe I've found a pace and balance that I can maintain to become even more healthy and stay that way.

Now if I can just find someonee to clean my home. :)

Can You Tell The Difference?

Since blogs, KC Star Letters to the Editor, and workplace water cooler conversation are about to once again get bombarded with the same tired commentary that the roads in Kansas are pristine but as soon as you get to KCMO the roads are covered, I present to you two photos snapped moments ago by the KC Scout system.

I-35, in Kansas, just west of the state line

I-35, in Missouri, just east of the state line

Can you see the difference? Yeah, neither can I. Now shut up and go back to work. We all have to deal with snow so stop your whining.

You, too, can be an accident scene investigator!

I just spotted the following two-car wreck at 10th & McGee from my office window.

If only there was some clue, some evidence, or just some sort of sign that could tell us how this might have happened:

Oh well, I guess some mysteries may never be solved.

Kablooey

Since everyone and their mother in KC is blogging about the same thing tonight I'm not going to waste time repating the same story everyone's already heard. But, here's the obligatory photos of the view from the windows at my office today, from 10th & Walnut.

Afraid Of The Dark Light

mooninites.jpg I wonder if the people of Boston will ever come to terms with the fact that the entire world is laughing at them for being terrified of pretty lights?

Their continued insistence that Cartoon Network committed a terrorist act and that Boston's response is justified is nothing more than a massive case of denial and is only making matters worse for themselves. Laugh at yourselves and move on.

Last night at karaoke I met some Bostonians in town for a convention. As they sang I thought about waving the little LED light on my keychain in support but then I realized it might frighten and confuse them.

Pssst.... Boston police? Youy better track down those kids in the bottom of the picture to the right. I think they're building a bomb!
