I became curious how many bars I have been to, so I decided to write them all down. This is the complete list, to the best of my memory. I tried to get it fairly close to the order in which I first had a drink at each one but that aspect is only approximate.

To count as a bar the establishment must serve alcohol, have an actual bar with bar stools, and I must have made at least one visit where the main reason I went there was to have a drink.

1990-1998



1. Santa Fe Saloon (Westport, Kansas City, MO) DEFUNCT [map][info]

   This was a dance club in Westport, the only one I ever actually danced in. I cannot remember the exact location. My memory puts it where McCoy's Public House is, but more likely it was on the opposite side of Pennsylvania Street.

2. Fuzzy's (Westport, Kansas City, MO) DEFUNCT[map][info]

   This was my first true bar. It was a small jazz bar located approximately where Harpo's is today.

1999-2002



3. The Quaff (Quality Hill, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

   The Quaff is a pretty popular sports bar in downtown Kansas City. The main bar is fairly small, but two additional rooms create a large open space that can hold a pretty big crowd. All the sports bar stapples are here: multiple big screens, pool tables, pop-a-shot, foozball, Golden Tee, darts, etc. They have a good selection of beer and the food is excellent for bar food. They even serve breakfast.
   
   This was my gang's first frequent hangout and the first place I ever acchieved "regular" status.
   
   If you start a tab, make sure you close it with cash instead of leaving it on your card. They add a surcharge if you pay with credit. Also look at your bill closely, this place is notorious for trying to slip extra drinks onto the tabs of unsuspecting customers. Screwing us over one too many times is why we no longer go here. (Though I still go for lunch on occasion.)

4. Tanner's (Quality Hill, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

   Popular but average sports bar. Large main level space plus a separate bar downstairs that I have not yet been to. Food is good but nothing spectacular. Unlike the Waldo location, this place is notorious for poor service so expect long waits -- especially if you are seated at a table.

5. Oldham (River Market, Kansas City, MO) DEFUNCT[map][info]

   This was located where Skybox is today. I was here for a private party in April 2002.

6. The Peanut (Quality Hill, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

   Cool dive bar with good beer selection and a variety of live music. Good food (burgers vary however) and good service. Upstairs room used for bands and private parties.

7. River Market Brewery (River Market, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

   Good home-brewed beers plus bottled standards. Live music and karaoke on some nights. Food and service varies in quality but usually leans towards good.

8. Chappell's (North Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

   It's been a few years since I've been here so I don't remember a whole lot. Good food and atmosphere. Not a dive. Massive amounts of baseball memorabilia, it's almost more of a museum.

9. Minsky's (River Market, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

   Good pizza, sandwiches, and appetizers. Great bar with a terrific selection. Service can get pretty slow at lunchtime. If you want to watch sports on a TV in a bar this is THE place in downtown Kansas City to do it! In addition to numerous small TVs there are three gigantic projection screens that can be seen from nearly every seat in the three-level terraced seating area.

10. The Velvet Dog (Union Hill, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

    This is one of the trendier more upscale bars, a genre I typically am not a fan of. But of the trendy upscale bars, this one is by far my favorite. A funky, relaxing lounge atmosphere with multiple rooms and two levels. It also has a fantastic, large patio in the back that, when busy, is serviced by its own bar.

11. Granfalloon (Plaza, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

    I've only been here once. The crowd was pretty much a mix of fratty and JoCo-ish, not the kind of place I like.

12. reVerse (Plaza, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

    Pretty trendy and upscale. Can be a relaxing environment when it's not so busy that people are pressed against you.

13. Replays Sports Bar (West Bottoms, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

    Located deep within the bowels of Kemper Arena, this sports bar is generally accessible only for private use or when there's a major event going on at Kemper.

2003-2004



14. Harry's Country Club (River Market, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

    Hands down the absolute best bar in Kansas City! I go here more often than any other place, visiting at least once a week for the past 3 years and counting. Great tap beer selection including all the local Bouelvard favorites, plus an extensive collection of bottled imports. Great food too! Live music some nights on the outdoor stage. Outdoor patio is a great place to people-watch or drink underth estars in front of the backdrop of the downtown skyline. On chillier nights there may even be a fire going in the outdoor firepit. The jukebox continuously plays a good mix of classic country, Sinatra, and other gems from a bygone era. A small humidor contains a respectable selection of cigars. The bartenders are highly skilled and both the bartenders and the servers make an effort to get to know you and remember you. Just an all around great place!

15. Buzzard Beach (Westport, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

    This is one of the few bars in Westport that I don't mind going to. A true dive. There's an upper and lower level, plus a deck upstairs. If you're a guy and you use the restroom, position yourself well or you risk giving the entire upstairs room an eyeful if someone opens the door. CASH ONLY!

16. Harling's Upstairs (Westport, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

    Good dive bar in midtown KC, immediately east of Westport. On the upper level of a 2-story building. Watch your step when entering the men's room!

17. O'Dowd's (Plaza, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

    I've only been here a few times, mainly for the fish and chips. The last time I tried to come here it was a Saturday night and they had a cover charge. I don't do cover charges so I went elsewhere. The inside always feels clasutrophobic to me but the rooftop patio is fantastic.

19. Buddha Bar (Union Hill, Kansas City, MO) DEFUNCT[map][info]

    Despite the trendiness I really like the laid-back, relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately nothing that opens in this building ever seems to last long despite the staying power of the sourrounding establishments.

20. The Bulldog (Crossroads, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

    Though a little pricey and upscale, this is one of my favorite bars in town. The focus is on mixed drinks from the prohibition area and before so be sure to get a drink menu and try some of the interesting concoctions from the past. Vince, the piano player, can play just about any song you throw his way as you enjoy your drinks.
    
    The main bar area can get very crowded on weekends (much of the space is taken up by the restaurant) but the bar in back (called Bill's Back Door I think) is sometimes open to handle the overflow. That back bar can also be reserved for private events.

21. Mike Kelly's Westsider (West Plaza, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

    Back in the day this was Kiki's Bon Ton. Today this spot on the extreme edge of Westport hosts live music at night. During the day you might hear some dirty jokes from the surly bartender.

22. Jilly's (Crossroads, Kansas City, MO)[map][info]

    I just don't get this place, and probably never will. With one exception (in which I stayed about 15 minutes because it was so packed it was claustrophobic), every time I have been here I've been the only customer in the place.
    
    One Saturday evening I was there around 8:30pm, all alone. "This place doesn't really get busy until around 10pm," the bartender told me. "Since you got here early you don't need to pay cover." I just don't get places that don't start their entertainment until that late, nor understand why all the fans of live music would wait until after they start charging a cover before showing up instead of arriving early and getting in for free.

On Sunday afternoon I walked from the City Market to the Nelson Art Gallery to see the newly-reopened sculpture garden. I had originally planned to walk back from there but then ended up continuing on to Waldo. Total distance was approximately 9.25 miles, roughly 18,500 steps taken, and 1,100 calories burned.

Along the way I was nearly run over by an idiot in a Mini Cooper who came barreling around a blind curve at high speed and honked at me for being in the crosswalk, andsoon after that I was threatened by a pair of vicious-looking dogs out being walked by an owner who looked way too small to handle them. Other than that is was a beautiful walk.

Saturday night after the fireworks I had a dream about an alien "invasion" of sorts.

A mid-sized flying saucer landed in Berkely Riverfront Park. The alien ambassadors excited the craft and proceeded to City Hall where the conducted a trade negotiation.

The talks let to the following deal:

The aliens gave us the technology to cure cancer. In exchange, Dave Winslow (the owner of Winslow's City Market BBQ) was to provide the aliens with his recipe for rib rub under tight security.

"It may seem to you that this trade is heavily imbalanced in your favor", said one of the aliens, "But you must understand... we really, really like BBQ."

The ship then took off with its delicious cargo, while we could now start curing cancer.

So, cholesterol-laden smoked deliciousness saves lives.

I didn't go to the American Royal street part this year because, <nerd alert>it was the same night as the season 3 premiere of Battlestar Galactica</nerd alert> and a few of us went to David Codding's house up north to watch it. As I headed back home I did manage to see the finale of Friday's fireworks show as I crossed the Broadway Bridge.

I knew that they repeat the fireworks show again on Saturday, so on Saturday night at 10:00 I went up on my roof to watch the show. Since there is a hill and some buildings in the way I didn't have the best view but I was able to see about 3/4 of each blast. Last night, thanks to the alert find and quick actions of Brandon, I was able to attend a sneak preview of Friday's season 3 premiere of Battlestar Galactica. It was a nice event, held at the Sprint IMAX theater at the Zoo, and while naturally the nerd contingient was well-represented, there was also a surprising cross section of the general population as well.

I do have a couple of suggestions for the organizers:

• If you are going to give away video games and ipods based upon asking trivia questions to 300+ sci-fi geeks crammed into a room, have a better plan in mind than "whoever shouts out the right answer first wins". :)
• If you're using the IMAX screen but the show itself is not actually in IMAX format, make sure people know that before they go in so that they won't be disappointed.

As for the season premiere itself, I will say absolutely nothing that will spoil it for fans of the show. However if you don't want to even know so much as my reactions, stop reading now.

• Battlestar Galactica has perhaps the best, smartest writing of any show currently on television, and this seaon's premiere is no exception. This is possibly the best season premiere episode I have ever seen of any television show, period. This episode could work equally well as a season finale.

• Certain aspects of this episode are going to make a lot of people very uncomfortable. Political overtones present in the first two seasons are now suddenly and dramatically reversed and it makes for some intense uneasiness that is sure to generate a lot of discussion.

• While most fans are anxiously awaiting this Friday's episode, I am now even more anxiously awaiting next Friday's episode.
  

If you are a fan of the show, you will not be disappointed. If you are not yet a fan, there's still time to grab the DVDs and get caught up. It's worth the effort.

As many of you who know me are aware, I suffer from frequent (nightly) nightmares and remember nearly all of my dreams in vivid detail. Most of my nightmares involve one of three things:

• I have committed murder and am about to be caught.
• A tornado is coming and no one will believe me.
• I am trapped in an elevator that is malfunctioning.

The elevator nightmare is my most common. In fact, with only a handful of exceptions, I have had a nightmare involving a malfunctioning elevator every night for at least the past 15 years, probably longer.

Last night was not one of the exceptions.

I was on the elevator in the building I live in and got off on what I thought was my floor. However I first noticed that the hallsways had all been redone with oak panels and when I got to where my apartment should be there was instead a doctor's office. That was when I realized I had gotten off on the wrong floor.

I re-boarded the elevator, which now had about 3 or 4 other prople on it, and it started going up.

The elevator climbed, and climbed, and climbed. As it kept on climbing, we quickly realized that not only had it failed to stop on the floors it was supposed to, it had now gone several floors beyond the actual height of the building we were in and was still continuing to climb. The other passengers began to panic and one of them asked what the hell was going on.

"Oh, the usual," I said. "This happens every time I board an elevator. It'll keep climbing and climbing until it slams into the top of the shaft. Then it will stop, pause for a moment, and then we will plummet to our deaths."

They didn't believe me.

But sure enough, a moment later, the elevator jarred to a stop as it hit the top of the shaft. The car was motionless for a moment as we all glanced at each other nervously. Then the free-fall began, and the other occupants started screaming in terror.

"Don't worry," I said, matter-of-factly. "Like I said, this happens to me every time. The trick is to just make sure you wake up before we hit bottom."

With that, and a little struggle, I slowly opened my eyes and awoke just as I heard the car smash into the bottom of the shaft.

And people wonder why I seem to be so tired every day.
